The American Idol Experience

February 9, 2009

Hi Everyone,

I had a chance to attend The American Idol Experience at the Disney Hollywood Studios on Saturday, February 7, 2009. Overall it was fun – although not, in my opinion, an ‘super’ attraction. I do recommend that you check it out.

Here are some pictures from the show:

International Price Comparison for resorts

January 2, 2009

There was an interesting post about International Price Comparison for resorts here:
http://micechat.com/forums/walt-disney-world-resort/109534-international-price-comparison-resorts.html

Basic idea: The hotels at Walt Disney World are much more expensive than those at other Disney parks.

Examples:

Hong Kong Disneyland hotel – $1,078.67

Disney Pop Century hotel – $1,749.36

Here are my thoughts:

I wonder if some of this is ‘they can, so they do’. While many visitors to WDW are form outside the US, I would assume that most are from the US East Coast. An unscientific proof is watching the board at Project Tomorrow plot visitors, as shown in this picture:

Project Tomorrow picture

Plot of visitor home-towns. You can see many come from the US East Coast.

BTW, more Project Tomorrow Pictures starting here:

But I digress…

So, many of these folks don’t or won’t travel internationally, or doing so would blow the price of their holiday out of the water. They want a quality vacation experience, and Disney is a safe and consistent choice, expecially for families. And when they compare the price of Disney to similar quality vacation options around the US, the Disney prices don’t seem so crazy.

Disney can, so Disney does.

Summary of my theory: Most visitors are from the US east coast. Their total cost of a Disney vacation, including travel, is “reasonable” compared to other options.

What do you think?

Disney World pictures of Holiday Wishes at Cinderella Castle

December 26, 2008

Hi Everyone,

I was lucky enough to see the Holiday Wishes fireworks at the Magic Kingdom – without having to pay the extra bucks for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. The Magic Kingdom shows the Holiday Wishes edition of fireworks in the weeks around Christmas and New Years.

Here are some pictures:

Mr. Walt Disney vs. The Walt Disney Company management

December 18, 2008
Recently there has been some disussion about Walt (the man), and his focus on quality and innovation, vs. the current Walt Disney World Management.
Here is an interesting quote from this web site:
A Tale of Two Brothers Business Development Seminars in New Jersey
http://moveahead1.wordpress.com/2008/07/09/a-tale-of-two-brothers/
“Roy was to money what Walt was to creativity. And I think it’s fair to say that without Roy, there would be no Disney Empire today. Roy, a banker by trade, was the one who finagled the loans, took out the mortgages, and begged and borrowed from relatives when Walt told him how much his next idea or initiative was going to cost.”
“Did Roy like it? Heck no! Being frugal by nature, he often fought with Walt tooth-and-nail, claiming how they couldn’t possibly incur any more debt. It got to the point where the two brothers wouldn’t talk for weeks at a time, instead sending handwritten notes to each other from their separate offices in Disney studios when they needed to communicate.”
“But through it all, Roy loved and believed in his brother and somehow made it happen.”
Walt was a unique combination of artist and visionary. As the face and front-man for his company, he let those qualities shine through. But there was a balance in the Disney family and the Disney company – and that was Roy.
Like any organization – whether it is a family or a business – there is a natural and necessary tension for balance: save vs. spend, dream vs. plan, explore vs. execute.
We can argue if it has gone too far one way or the other at The Walt Disney Company. But I think we need to recognize that the management and employees at Disney are very very smart people doing a good job with all their heart.
I actually know a few Disney employees personally. When you talk to Disney employees, you see that their employer does something very special as seen through the employee’s eyes.
And I think the general public agrees – and they vote that agreement with their dollars.
Just my two cents…
